On Tuesday I received the sad news that a dog I look after and walk weekly had been put to sleep the day before. Baxter the Boxer, slobbery and still energetic for a senior, stole my heart. He was more than ‘just’ a dog. He made me laugh. He caused me all kinds of embarrassment when out walking with him (he didn’t see the reason why he couldn’t partake in cricket or get friendly with golden retrievers, male preferably). He would produce the biggest drool bubbles ever, from both sides of his jowls, if food was about. He would vigorously shake, sending slobber flying in all directions (but more often, in my direction). He wouldn’t take his eyes of Tabby in the park: he was the perfect Nanny dog. He had a rocky start in life but he was rescued and found a beautiful forever home. He had his happy ever after ending. I loved Baxter. We all did. I cried so hard when I learnt they found lung cancer and couldn’t do anything for him apart from gently ease him from this life to the next.
